Thoughts on 5.19 Hammer of the Gods

werewolf

So, I watched the episode twice, once last night, when my impression was "not good, not bad", and again today. Let me just say that I was not *more* impressed upon second watching.

There were some things to like about this episode. For instance: other, "pagan" gods, getting together to complain about the predominance of that upstart Judeo-Christian faith and its threat to destroy "their" world (admit it, they're right, they were here first). Gabriel. Lucifer. Elephants. A very powerful feminine figure, quite possibly the most powerful god in the room, even if she was a little too "destroy first, ask permission later". Dean and Sam trying very hard to work together; at least they seemed to be on the same page again. The whole Hotel California-type setting, which should have been better handled. The fact that other religions were represented at the highest levels is only fitting since they have previously been represented by supernatural creatures (Vanir, Tulpa, and others come to mind).

There were some things to dislike about this episode. I tried very hard, after Dark Side of the Moon, not to cringe when I read Dabb&Loflin's names in the credits, but they have disappointed yet again. It was not entirely their fault, since the directing was also seriously lacking. For example, the show should have ended with the final gasp of Casa Erotica 13. The last scenes with Pestilence were not only unnecessary for this episode's story but *seriously* overplayed.

It appears that ALL of the old-school pagan gods subsisted by eating humans. Now, we've seen the Vanir which needed human sacrifice, and the pagan gods in A Very Supernatural Christmas who also took their "tribute" in the form of sacrificial human offerings. But this episode would have us believe that even the Greco-Roman gods, the Oriental gods, all historical mythologies with the apparent exception of Judeo-Christian -- all of them EAT PEOPLE FOR DINNER. All of them. Anybody else have a problem with that?

I love that Gabriel finally stepped up to the Team Humanity plate. That he finally realized that he needed to stand up to his family. Love it. But I hate that it was because he was so smitten by a former love that he entered into the fray at all. And I am really really sad that one of my favorite recurring characters, after Bobby and Castiel, is now (apparently) deceased.

I loved that Lucifer had what appeared to be actual remorse when he killed his brother. But he did it anyway. I love the irony in Dean lecturing Gabriel about being unwilling to kill his own brother (hello Pot, meet Kettle). I was highly irritated by not being able to see enough nametags to make out more than a few gods; I frankly didn't care enough after the episode ended to go through the "convention" scenes frame-by-frame, as I did last week with Dean's letter, to see if I could read their names, so I have no idea who half of the contestants were supposed to be. None of them seemed particularly godlike anyway. With the exception of Kali, and possibly Ganesh, the casting of the gods was not plausible to me. I DID see the irony in all of the old gods appearing to be kinda run-down, kinda creepy, kinda used-to-be-somebody folk. To an extent that actually worked. But I would have hoped, for example, that Baldur or Mercury might more strongly resemble the historical depictions of them. Seeing Mercury as a bow-tie-wearing desk clerk (yeah, I know, messenger of the gods, whatever)... maybe I just don't get the joke, but it was a huge disconnect between the outward appearance of the actors and the gods they were supposedly portraying. I'd like to think Show was deliberately making a statement by such casting choices. If so, the statement is apparently that the Judeo-Christian religion is the only worldview that matters or has any real power (or as Lucifer implied, has seized the real power), and that just leaves a funny taste in my mouth. Please, no religious wars in the comments, and do not attempt to save my soul. I am not declaring myself anti-Christian or pro-pagan gods. I just think that Show could be more sensitive. But as Kali said, Westerners are arrogant, and think theirs is the only religion that matters. That could have been fixed by a few additional lines (they could have found the time by cutting Pestilence's appearance). Perhaps Lucifer could have explained, as he was so easily stomping on the other gods, that he draws his powers from the chaos brought forth by the Judeo-Christian-themed apocalypse, and is therefore now the most powerful player.

In all, I found this a disappointing episode. I know that, after last week's 100th episode win, it was unlikely to be awesome in comparison, but it could have been so much better. I guess I'll focus on the good and look forward to the next new episode. Is it Thursday yet?

Glad I wasn't the only one disappointed in the way they chose to end it with an over-active snotty-nosed Pestilence! Geez!
I hink we truly lost Gabriel, our beloved Trickster, becuz they showed his singed wings. I didn't like all the gods in a story, it's more believable if we didn't see a group of them. Oh, well. Guess we can't complain too much if we didn't write it but I liked that the boys now have a place to start looking for a solution to Lucifer.
And I got all confused with the Ghostfacers popping up! I am manually recording it and pausing during commercials and wasn't sure if it was part of it or what!
That's funny you mentioned Hotel California cuz that song popped into my head during the show!

Yeah, I'm afraid you're right about Gabriel, the wing-ash is probably the telltale giveaway. Such a shame. I'm gonna miss him.

As I said in my previous post, the Ghostfacers promo was badly placed. And yeah, Pestilence was just unnecessarily over-the-top, especially for a final, teaser scene. Did NOT make me squeal with happy anticipation for next week. ("Oh, boy, Pestilence is finally showing up and he's going to cover everything in disgusting snot! I can't wait!") Bleghhhh.

Thanks for commenting!

Well if God brought back Castiel I will cross my fingers that he will bring back Gabe and that Lucifer will bring back Zack who has replaced YED as my all time favorite villian

You're right about that last scene - it was too long and a little over the top (especially when Pestilence sneeze on the guy! eww)

But I hate that it was because he was so smitten by a former love that he entered into the fray at all.

I didn't have the feeling, contrary to what Lucifer said, that it was only because of Kali that Gabriel decided to join Team Free Will. I really think that Dean's speeches (in "Changing Channels" and in this episode) made an impression on him - after all, he mentions it in his last message.

I'm not saying that he only joined the Team because of Kali. I'm saying that the reason he gave for coming to the party was to try to influence/rescue her. That was his motivation until the scene in the car with Dean, when he was finally convinced to stop laying low and DO something. I think that was when he changed his mind and took a stand. Until then he was hoping he could watch from the sidelines, maybe intervene to save his favorite humans and favorite goddess but not have to actually face his family. Too bad stepping up to the plate got him killed :-(

Yes, poor Gabriel. :(

Oh good, it's not just me who was disappointed! Seriously...I wouldn't have had a problem bringing in all the old gods...but like, 8 episodes ago! It's a little too late in the game to bring in new players...plus, why introduce these characters, shove them randomly into the story arc and then just kill 'em all off? There would have been a way to incorporate this story, but it's too little, too late.

I also agree that none of the actors really exuded any "godliness." I guess maybe they were trying to blend, but it looked more like an AA meeting that a panel of supreme beings.

I guess I just felt that there are soooo many other things that need to be wrapped up and explained in the last few episodes, this one felt unnecessary. With the exception of Gabriel's little tidbit of info at the end, this really didn't do anything to advance the story.

I'm glad that Gabriel stepped up and made a choice...but I was pissed that his death was so quick and anti-climactic. I mean, c'mon...he's been the Trickster for so long and the best he could come up with was the old sneak-up-behind-you-while-you're-distracted bit? I guess I would have liked him to have more of a heroes death if he was going to go...::sigh::

Last scene with Pestilence? Gross...and it felt really tacked on, almost like it was an afterthought...that, plus the lead into the preview still doesn't make me feel very excited.

Over all, one of my least favourite to date...and I only had like, 2 to begin with! But I'm still hopeful...I hope the season goes out with a bang. :)

I'm torn on your first statement. It would have been much better to intro the gods earlier in the season... but that would have needed a different story altogether; that would have been too early to kill The Gabester and to find out what the last-ditch Plan B was. But so much more could have been done with them; if they hadn't had to work around the magic Number 100 maybe the gods would have been in a two-part episode.

but it looked more like an AA meeting that a panel of supreme beings.

Hee hee. Yes.

I was happier with Gabriel's second death. The first was a total waste and didn't do him justice. The final death wasn't exactly heroic, but he did die finally standing up to his family and declaring himself on the side of Team Humanity, which was pretty heroic for him. Kind of felt to me like when Agent Henricksen died. ("Yay! We have an awesome new ally! Wait, now he's dead, WTF?")

Yeah, like I told [info], the scene with Pestilence ("tacked-on" is an accurate description) doesn't exactly make me wave my hands with glee over next week's episode. Not really looking forward to Mr. Gross, you know?

Thanks for weighing in!

I think the actors, the costuming department, the writers etc were going for the American Gods Neil Gaimen feel but still they could have given Odin a freaking eye patch - grrr do your homework guys

Thoughts on Hammer of the Gods
I liked this episode. Yeah it was very serious and mega sad...but the humorous parts priceless (Dean walking down the hall & seeing an elephant! Jensen killed me with his reaction and facial expressions ROFLMAO)
Luci was really scary. All of Richard's scenes were great as Loki, the Trickster and Gabriel, and I'm so very very sad to see him dead. Again with the black wings, when I say them with Zack I cheered, but seeing them on Gabriel was tragic. Luci having not a second thought to killing his younger bro...I didn't like him before and don't like him even more!!!
And Pestilence "The Grossest Scene ever in SPN" compared to this MBV scene was my favorite lol. I am trumped by snot over blood.

"The Elysian Fields Hotel" wasn't that's Hercule's (Kevin Sorbo) his heaven. Clever twist on the hotel name.

These writers aren't my favorites, they written quite a few I didn't care much for. This could have been better. Don't totally disagree with the comments already posted. You are right about the directing...something was very off - it didn't really feel like a SPN episode

Re: Thoughts on Hammer of the Gods
Ooops, I'm tardy on my comment replies.... I was very sad too to see those wing shadows, looks like The Gabester is really dead. But that means *Lucifer killed an archangel!* BAD Luci!!!

Looking forward to a new episode tonight -- despite the likely appearance of Pestilence. Yuck. Last week's teaser is *almost* enough to make me not want to watch. Yuck yuck ick.

Part of the reason it didn't feel like a SPN ep may be because our boys basically spent their time sitting in various rooms and freaking out. We tend to like it when they're a little more proactive.

Thanks for commenting!

Count me as one who had a problem with the God all eating human flesh including the well known vegetarian. Once again Dabb and Loflin left me feeling like they didn't do their homework. I know the are comic book writers but Marvel did a better job with Norse Mythos than they did and Hercules and Xena handled Greek Mythos better. They have no excuse for not doing a little research

Which brings me to Baldur who was certainly as pretty as mythology says he was but he should have been in the underworld (he did not die in battle so Vahalla was forbidden to him. But if he was going to be out, he an Odin should have both gone ballistic the moment that Loki walked in the room, murder of Baldur, instigator of Ragnarok, father of Fenir - I mean really. Stupid stupid choice for the Gabriel to be Loki when there were so many other more neutral tricksters and when the art department implied in Tall Tales that he might be either Raven or Coyote. But if you don't want a Caucasian to be an American Native God, then have him be Mercury/Hermes. Hermes the Greek version of Mercury was also a trickster god as well as a messenger of the Gods - and Gabriel is also a messenger of God - so there is synergy. Also one of my favorite tricks he played lead to him giving Apollo the first harp which he created. Harp-Angels again synergy. Loki would have done much better as the God assigned to operate the Hotel as per legend he often pulled favors for the Gods (before he got himself banned) where he would do an elaborate false set up, so this would be right up his alley as would the betrayal - assuming you even had Loki at all in the same room with Baldur and Odin.

All in all this episode was like one of those meals which is sort of tasty going down but then you end up burping something nasty and foul tasting as well as smelling the remainder of the day

Hah! Good line, zaz. Yeah, clearly no real research was done. And wait, if Baldur was dead according to mythology, why is he even there? Argh, I hate being negative about my favorite Show, but the comic book writers bring out the worst in me.

Anything with the boys...
I have to admit that I like all of the episodes. Other than watching historical shows on cable, Spartacus and Army Wives, this *is* the show I tune into - heck I even meet a couple of people online in IM so we can all watch the show and chat'er up. And considering that we may be getting only one more year to see our boys, better believe I'm going to see the bright side of every show :) I wasn't disappointed but I did a big WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA for us losing Gabriel. I'll keep on tuning in for as long as they'll run the series :)

Atta girl/boy! Make no mistake, I'll keep tuning in too. I love this Show. But when they have a sub-par episode I notice, and Dabb&Loflin tend to write most of them. Thanks for commenting and keep watching!
